I just finished a dress for my son's elementary school play. I love it!!! I wish I was thin... I would definetely make one for me. The play has 2 casts, so I actually had to make 2 dresses.

The pattern is the Simplicity 3514.

It is not a simple pattern for sewing... Because of the fabric, and the pattern, I had to do a lot of "ironing" sewing. Here are some details of the dress. First the sleeve.

The collar.

The play is the Chocolate Factory. The dress is for the girl that "blows up". I had to alter the pattern to make room for the "blowing up". Because the pattern already has a cut on the front, I just added more fabric here. I do not know the term in english. In portuguese is "godet". Here is a picture of the pattern, and what I did to it.

The consequence of doing that is the seam on the side gets to be a problem: bias fabric against non-bias fabric. The front has a lot of stretch, while the back does not... Here is what I mean.

But I loved the end-result: a lot of flair at the botton.

Finally, the explanations on the pattern are confusing. So be aware (either that, or I was too tired and my brain was not working). One thing that comes to my mind is the collar finishing. For all views, the biased tape is what finishes it. Also, one of the markings on the pattern was wrong. Here is the marking for the sleeve:

And here is the marking for the "shoulder" (actually the front yoke)

They do not match. But the marking on the sleeve does match the seam of the yoke to the rest of the front.
Anyway, I really liked the dress. I saw the girls that will be wearing the dresses, and they looked gorgeous!
Thanks for looking.
